"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit…" You've seen it everywhere — in design mockups, website templates, typography specimens, and software demos. But what is it, where did it come from, and why do designers keep using it instead of real text?
The origin of Lorem Ipsum
Lorem Ipsum is derived from a work by the Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero, written in 45 BC: "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil). The original Latin passage reads: "Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…" which translates roughly as "There is no one who loves pain itself, who seeks after it and wants to have it, simply because it is pain…"
The Lorem Ipsum text used today is a scrambled, abbreviated version of that passage — not a complete or grammatically correct Latin text. It has been the industry standard placeholder text since the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled it for use in a type specimen book. It was revived in the 1960s with the release of Letraset dry-transfer sheets, and gained its current ubiquity when Aldus PageMaker included it as default placeholder text.
Why designers use placeholder text
The purpose of placeholder text is to let designers and clients evaluate a layout's visual properties — typography, spacing, hierarchy, line length, contrast — without getting distracted by the actual content. If real text is used too early in the design process, reviewers tend to critique the copy rather than the design. Placeholder text keeps the focus on form.
Lorem Ipsum is also long enough to fill a real layout and has a natural distribution of word lengths and punctuation that approximates how real prose looks on a page. Random words or repeated phrases ("content here content here") produce unnatural-looking text blocks that don't represent how the final design will behave with real copy.
Variations and alternatives
The standard Lorem Ipsum paragraph starts with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" Other variations generate text with different characteristics: lorem ipsum generators typically offer sentences, paragraphs, or word counts, and some allow you to start paragraphs differently to avoid all mockups looking identical.
Alternative placeholder systems include Cicero quotes (using the actual Cicero text), language-specific placeholders for internationalization testing, and domain-specific dummy text (medical, legal, technical) to simulate how content will look in context.
When to use real content instead
Lorem Ipsum has real limitations. It doesn't reveal how a design handles content that is too long, too short, or structured differently than expected. Use real (or realistic) content when:
- Testing responsiveness and layout breakpoints with real-world content lengths.
- Conducting usability testing — participants find it easier to evaluate layouts with understandable text.
- Presenting final designs to stakeholders for approval before development begins.
- Building components that will appear in search results or social shares — placeholder text can accidentally leak into production.
